NEW FRESHWATER SITESThe Environment Agency (EA) and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have agreed to add four new river sites to ECN, to fill gaps in the Network (see map below). The EA will contribute sites from its Thames Region (the Lambourn and the Coin) and its Southern Region (the Eden). SEPA will add a site from the Highland Region in the north-west of Scotland (the Ewe). This brings the total number of sites in ECN to 53. River Ewe, Highland Region A short stretch of river running north-west out of Loch Maree into the sea at Poolewe. Catchment is as close to pristine as is possible in mainland Scotland. The Ewe and Loch Maree are important for their salmonid fisheries. River Lambourn, Berkshire Rises in the chalk of the Berkshire Downs and runs for 26 km into the Kennet. Catchment mostly rural, apart from Newbury. Good water quality and part of a Special Area of Conservation. River Coin, Gloucestershire Rises in the Cotswolds and joins the Thames at Lechlade. Catchment mostly rural. The biological quality of this river is very good. River Eden, Kent Tributary of the Medway, with a largely rural catchment, but receives treated sewage effluent from two works. Subject to EC Urban Water Treatment 'Sensitive Waters' investigations.
