Long-term biodiversity monitoring: a conservation user’s perspective

Abstract

The formal mechanism for conservation of biodiversity in the United Kingdom has been through the selection and management of Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The presentation will give an overview of how these sites have been monitored in England and how this process relates to current and future needs. This example illustrates the tensions between science, politics and pragmatism to create a credible process for assessing the condition of wildlife.
