INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS

ECN is playing a key role in several international long-term research networks:

The ECN Central Co-ordination Unit (CCU) co-ordinated the early development of LTER-Europe. ECN has been an active partner in the network since its formation. The CCU manages the LTER-Europe website on behalf of the network (the website is hosted by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, home of the ECN CCU). ECN's Science Liaison Officer, Andrew Sier, is the current lead of the LTER-Europe Communications Expert Panel.

ECN is the UK node of the International Long-term Ecological Research Network (ILTER). The current chair of ILTER is Dr Terry Parr of CEH Lancaster (home of the ECN Central Co-ordination Unit). Dr Parr was the former Co-ordinator of ECN. The CCU manages the ILTER website on behalf of the network (the website is hosted by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, home of the ECN CCU). Andrew Sier is a member of the ILTER Public and Policy Committee.

ALTER-Net (A Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research Network) is a network of European partner organisations. ALTER-Net integrates research capacities across Europe: assessing changes in biodiversity, analyzing the effect of those changes on ecosystem services and informing the public and policy makers about this at a European scale. Originally funded by the European Union’s Framework VI program to stimulate a collaborative approach, ALTER-Net is now operating independently. Phase I of ALTER-Net was led by CEH. The Macaulay Institute is also one of the partners participating in ALTER-Net. Dr Terry Parr currently chairs the ALTER-Net Council, and Andrew Sier is a member of the ALTER-Net Management Board.

A number of ECN partners have been - or continue to be - engaged with these networks in a range of ways, for example through scientific projects and proposals, multi-site experiments and the development of data management approaches.
