13/11/2009 Water-related ECN studies at Snowdon featured in latest issue of H20 newsletter
Some of the ECN studies at Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) are reported in an article in CCW's H20 newsletter.
13/11/2009 Alice Holt forest included in South Downs National Park
Alice Holt forest is to be included in the South Downs National Park, the UK's ninth National Park. ECN has a site in Alice Holt, managed by Forest Research on behalf of the Forestry Commission.
06/11/2009 Soils, butterflies and beetles respond to changing pressures on the UK environment
The first major review of trends in terrestrial ecology at twelve key sites within the UK Environmental Change Network between 1993 and 2007 is published today in the journal Biological Conservation. Soils, vegetation and animal communities all show indications of responses to environmental change over the study period.
10/08/2009 Storm puts equipment at Sourhope to the test!
A series of short, sharp rainfall events recorded at Sourhope in July culminated in a particularly heavy and prolonged downpour during Friday 17th and the early hours of Saturday 18th July, causing damage to a gauging station and road.
21/07/2009 Long-term forest study in Yosemite
To understand some processes in the natural environment often requires long-term studies. A good example of this long-term approach is a recent research programme in the US. Scientists in California have set up a unique long-term experiment to track the life histories of some of the world's oldest and tallest trees. The study aims to investigate whether the giant trees are perishing as a result of climate change.
20/05/2009 Environment Agency sets out blueprint to breathe new life into our iconic lakes
England’s most famous lakes such as Windermere and Grasmere are facing serious threats from climate change, non-native species and pollution from farming and sewage, and need urgent action to protect and restore them for future generations. The Environment Agency, an ECN sponsor, is taking action to revive the life and health of lakes in England and Wales.

15/4/2009 UK butterfly numbers fall to new low
Butterfly numbers have fallen to a new low, according to long-term data from the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, operated by Butterfly Conservation and ECN partner the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
17/3/2009 New publication from ECN - Climate change impacts: Evidence from ECN sites
This publication highlights some of the findings from ECN monitoring and research which provide evidence of the sensitivity of natural ecosystems in the UK to variability and change in climate.
