Long-term observations of increasing snow cover in the western Cairngorms

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * The authors used photographs collected as part of the ECN monitoring at our Cairngorm site to determine how the duration of snow cover has changed in recent years.

Ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) population declines and phenological changes: Is there a connection?

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * The authors used ECN data for two sites in Scotland to reveal correlations between declining ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) populations and phenological changes (the timing of natural events).

Continent-wide response of mountain vegetation to climate change

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * This paper, in the journal Nature Climate Change, is based on analyses of data from mountain-top locations across Europe, including ECN Cairngorms.

Hydrochloric acid: An overlooked driver of environmental change

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * This paper by Dr Chris Evans and colleagues was stimulated originally by the detection of unexpected changes in soil pH in Moor House ECN data.

Evidence for increases in vegetation species richness across the UK Environmental Change Network sites linked to changes in air pollution and weather patterns

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * This paper, published in a Special Issue of the journal Ecological Indicators to mark 20 years of data collection at ECN terrestrial sites, uses detailed ECN vegetation data. The data suggest that species richness has increased at the sites during the period 1993-2012

Fine-scale temporal characterization of trends in soil water dissolved organic carbon and potential drivers

* INCLUDES 'WHY IT MATTERS' FEATURE * This paper, published in a Special Issue of the journal Ecological Indicators to mark 20 years of data collection at ECN terrestrial sites, presents an analysis of the temporal relationships between soil solution chemistry and parameters thought to regulate Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) production. Data from both ECN and Forest Level II plots were used.

Release from sheep‐grazing appears to put some heart back into upland vegetation: A comparison of nutritional properties of plant species in long‐term grazing experiments

This study at ECN Moor House in the English Pennine hills compares the nutritional properties of plant species in sheep-grazed and ungrazed upland plots. The study is based on long-term grazing exclosures at Moor House that are now coordinated by ECN and supported by the Ecological Continuity Trust (ECT). The authors contributed the front cover image for this issue of Annals of Applied Biology.

State Tagging for Improved Earth and Environmental Data Quality Assurance

This paper presents an innovative approach to aid quality assessment of environmental data. The authors used both ECN and Cumbrian Lakes Monitoring data to validate the approach.

Special Issue marking 20 years of detailed environmental monitoring by ECN

'Assessing ecosystem resilience through Long Term Ecosystem Research: observations from the first twenty years of the UK Environmental Change Network' was a Special Issue of the journal Ecological Indicators published in 2016 and showcasing a range of research using ECN data and sites.
